The Chief Minister of Melaka Adly Zahari has announced today that the government has declared 2019 to be the year focusing on tourism in Melaka.
The target in 2019 is to attract 20 million visitors into Melaka and make them stay at least 3 nights in the state, creating RM24 billion in revenue.
He is also confident for Melaka to reach its target of 17 million visitors for 2018, based on the performance of the first half year.
Mega projects including Impression City, Harbour City Theme Park, Pulau Besar redevelopment project, Port of Tanjung Bruas and Port of Melaka Gateway, will also contribute to the state's economy welfare. So far, the state government has already brought in 335 million Ringgit worth of investment to further stimulate the state's economy.
Perhaps the most exciting news for locals though, is that Airasia has agreed to introduce four new routes from the Melaka International Airport:
Melaka - Kota Kinabalu
Melaka - Penang
Melaka - Chiang Mai
Melaka - Surabaya
If these can be realized, it will bring a healthy boost to Melaka's already booming tourism industry. The next thing the state government needs to work on, is to improve the public transport network and connectivity to make it more user friendly, especially to tourists who have to rely on public transport.
